About Takusko House This 15-bedroom, 7, 000-square-foot lodge was established in 1983. McGrath is located on the Kuskokwim River in central Alaska, a 45-minute flight from Anchorage. The area has good fishing and hunting, and in the winter people enjoy dog sledding, snowmobiling, skiing, and the northern lights. McGrath is also a major checkpoint for the Iron Dog snowmobile race and the Iditarod sled dog race. The entire business is enclosed within a 7, 000-square-foot building including a large screened deck and large attached garage on a one-acre lot in mid-town McGrath. The lodge has a comfortable, casual atmosphere, more like a B&B or a boarding house than a hotel, although there are five rooms with private bathrooms. The lodge has high-speed internet access and satellite television in two public rooms. Current Activities The primary business is lodging and food service for guests. The clientele consists of service providers traveling to and through McGrath ( a hub for central Alaskan villages ) as well as hunters, Iditarod tourists and Irondog participants. The central Alaska region is a great place for fishing, hunting, gold mining, snowmobile trips, dog mushing, general sightseeing, and purchasing authentic native arts and crafts. Some native crafts are for sale. In addition, the lodge is set up to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner to guests.
