Other Details:
121 North Side Square was built in 1868, as a general store, by 2 brothers. The foundation is still comprised of rough cut cedar trees (bark still intact) set in live rock. In the 1920’s this site housed a “mom and pop” diner called “Nu-Way” hamburgers. The owner’s son, Glenn Sherrill, traveled to Chattanooga to propose a business idea to R. B. Davenport. This partnership was the beginning of the Krystal Corporation. In 1936, when the senior Mr. Sherrill decided to retire, Glenn made this location the first Krystal in Alabama. In 1969, Krystal moved to it’s current location on Whitesburg Drive. Another local diner called “Snow White” moved into this location in 1971. The owner, James Bennett, had actually worked for the Sherrill’s. Mr. Bennett sold the site to Pam Mathews in 1995, and we purchased the diner in 1999.
