Petrified Forest National Park was established as a national monument in 1906 that maintains and protects petrified wood. The park supports camping, junior ranger and cultural programs that provide opportunities to share history and traditional craft with individuals. Petrified Forest National Park serves as a venue for organizing activities, including sightseeing, photography, hiking, horseback riding, backpacking and bird watching. The park includes a museum and science and education centers. The area contains one of the world s largest concentrations of petrified wood and multihued badlands of the Painted Desert. It is also comprised of historic structures, archeological sites and fossils. Located in Petrified Forest, Ariz., the Petrified Forest National Park is owned and operated by the National Park Service, a bureau within the Department of the Interior, which maintains several parks and more than 400 natural, cultural and recreational sites across the United States.
