Post 2422 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is located on Orange Avenue, adjacent to Spreckels Park. This little haven of history and honor acts as a gathering spot and watering hole for local military members.

As a national organization, the VFW fights to protect the rights and benefits of our nation's soldiers. Its history traces back to 1899, following the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection.

Inside the local post, the walls are lined with memorabilia, and mini F-18s dangle from the ceiling. The club serves tacos and enchiladas every Friday afternoon. On the first and third Fridays of the month, the club offers a full dinner, one of which is hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary Club. There are hamburgers on Saturday and barbequed steak on Sunday, during the summer concerts in the park.

The location also has a "canteen" with a full bar. But according to club bylaws, you must be a VFW member, or a guest of a member, in order to be served. The bar is a popular spot for watching sports games, especially during football season.

Membership is available to any member of the military that has served in a foreign war, and membership rates vary. Meetings are held the third Wednesday of every month at 6:30pm.

The canteen is open to the public on certain holidays including the Fourth of July and Memorial Day. While you're there, be sure to check out the Salute to Service Memorial Wall. Each tile represents a military member that has served this country honorably. The wall is located outside the building on Orange Avenue.
