A major stopover for egrets and Canadian geese, among many other migratory birds traveling the Pacific Flyway from Alaska to South America, the West Area Pond is landscaped with California native grasses and other plants.
Just inside the north entrance off Covell Boulevard, a wooden observation deck offers a view of the pond itself surrounding a wooded island where many of the birds temporarily nest. The habitat area itself is protected by a split rail and chain-link fences. Pedestrians following the path that meanders south from the observation deck and to the east of the habitat area can catch glimpses of avian arrivals and departures.
