Only in operation for a year,1, formerly Johnny's Tavern Healdsburg is an informal hot dog and beer diner near the busiest intersection in town. Also known as "Goofy's", the tavern is on the ground floor of an 1858 building at the corner of Healdsburg Ave with Mill St. Colorful beer signs and slogans decorate the walls, along with 45rpm records and other musical paraphrenalia. Musical instruments including piano, drum kit and guitars are set up in a corner, ready for the Friday night music sessions. There's also karaoke on Thursday nights, and Johnny's is now the only place in town for this customer performance fad.

The food is basic -- steamed hot dogs and buns, buffalo wings, home-made chili -- and gregarious proprietor Johnny Gavello promises a new home-made soup daily in the winter months. Beer is bottled or draught, with regional micro-brews on tap; wine is also available. A large parking lot is behind the building, in the Antiques Mall area, helping to make this a popular after-hours hangout for area workers and young adults.
