Alfred Peet opened his first coffee shop in Berkeley in 1966. He ended up mentoring and inspiring a generation of coffee entrepreneurs, including the founders of Starbucks. 

Peet's roasts all coffee beans in an artisan LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold-certified roasting facility, the first in the nation. The company's philosophy is that "true quality cannot be achieved without social, environmental and economic sustainability."
