Trinidad Head can be seen miles before you reach the town, and the Head offers a hike rewarded by stunning ocean and coastal views. At it's base, Trinidad Bay is dotted with boats. There's a working fishing pier with a restaurant. Nearby is the HSU Marine Lab & Aquarium with tide pool tanks. In the vicinity of Trinidad are some of the most beautiful parks and beaches in California, including Trinidad State Beach and Patrick's State Park. Take Scenic Drive south from town through an area of ocean view homes and pocket beaches. Going north, take Patrick's Point Drive for a splendid scenic alternative to Hwy 101, offering ocean vista. The main attraction of Redwoods National and State Parks is the magnificent coast redwood trees that inhabit the land. Coast Redwood ( Sequoia sempervirens ): These trees are the tallest living things on the planet, averaging 250' to 300' tall. They depend on the environment that only a few places, including the northern California coast, can provide. The fog acts as insulation for the trees, keeping the trees cool in the summer, and warming them in the winter. The trees require much water, such as the 50 to 80 inches the coast provides annually. The oldest known coast redwood is over 2, 200 years old. Lagoon State Parks are just 9 miles from the campground. They are excellent for walking the beach, observing elk in the reeds, watching the river otters and seals play along the shores. Kayaking or canoeing in the lagoons is great for exploring the coves and creeks which feed into the lagoons. Observe the Pelicans, Great Blue Herons, Green Backed Herons, Black Crowned Night Herons, Cedar Wax Wings, Osprey and various other varieties of birds in the area. Shore birds also inhabit the many beaches in the area. Along the ocean, in season, gray whales can be observed migrating through the area.
