Other Details:
The Nieuport 17 was an early French hi-wing single seat fighter plane in which many allied flyers became aces. This frail but agile little “V-strutter” gained some well-deserved fame as the aeroplane flown by American volunteers of the celebrated Lafayette Escadrille prior to America’s entry into WWI. The new “Nieuport 17? located in “Lafayette Plaza” at Newport Avenue and Irvine Boulevard is the realization of former naval aviator Bill Bettis’ lifelong dream. Bill designed and built his new restaurant to exacting standards and latest state-of-the-art equipment couched in the warm atmosphere of a Tirolean hunting lodge. It all started after his college days at USC and his flying career. Bill became vice president of Cellar Door Restaurants in Houston, Texas, Ten years later he opened the first Nieuport 17 where naturally the theme was aviation. The collection of authentic artifacts, photos and paintings displayed may be one of the finest anywhere. Many of these pieces have been donated by patrons and are proudly displayed for your enjoyment. Our patrons have included such notables as R.G. Smith, Gen. Curtis LeMay, the Blue Angels, The Thunderbirds, Flying Tigers, Gen. Jimmy Doolittle, Gen. Adolf Galland, Eddie Martin, Gunther Rall, Sahuro Sakai, Frank Tallman, Bob Hoover, and other aces and test pilots covering almost the full spectrum of aviation. For over 40 years, it has been our pleasure to serve you and we invite you to come in for dinner and enjoy our fine entertainment.
