Other Details:
Located in historic Essex, Conn., Oliver's Restaurant & Taverne was named after the first ship, The Oliver Cromwell, built for the Continental Navy in 1775 at Essex. The dining establishment has many artifacts from the early 20th century on display 365 days a year. Located in its upstairs loft is a restored handcrafted, oak and mahogany bar built in 1903 and originally installed at the Wentworth Hotel in Chicago. It remained there until 1921, when prohibition was enacted. In 1923, the bar was moved to Kelly's Speakeasy in Cicero, Ill., where it was a favorite gathering place for local patrons as well as famous characters such as Al Capone, Bugs Moran and Babe Ruth. When Kelly's closed in 1933, the bar went into oblivion until it was discovered at a Connecticut antique dealer in 1981. Oliver s Restaurant & Taverne s menu includes appetizers, seafood, beef, ribs and a variety of burgers.
