Newcomers to downtown Meriden often do a double-take when they see a gleaming silver trolley car nestled amidst the office buildings in the center of the city. Cassidy's diner (or Cassidies as it is sometimes spelled) has been a Meriden landmark since opening in 1946, but today many residents don't know that it's actually open. A car crashed into the diner in 2008, and it took nearly two years to restore. Finally, in 2010, owner Jay Eagle Delaney reopened the pristine structure's sliding train-car doors to the public. He offers usual diner fare -- eggs, hash browns, burgers and fries -- at sometimes startlingly low prices. Delaney, who is Irish and Native American, adds meals from his heritage to the menu like corned beef and cabbage and is constantly inventing tasty new dishes like his cinnamon bun French toast.
