The Department of Developmental Services in the West Region provides assistance to individuals diagnosed with mental retardation and their families in a 57-town area surrounding Norwalk. In addition to providing grants and respite care, DDS also operates the Southbury Training School, a residential program that offers job training and supervised employment, leisure activities, and community involvement. Those requiring less intervention are eligible for community training homes or supported living programs.
