Established in 1927, the Council of Chief State School Officers is a nonprofit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity and five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions. It represents the chief state school officers views on the education policy. The council seeks member consensus on several educational issues and expresses their views to civic and professional organizations, federal agencies, congress and the public. It also evaluates and comments on various federal acts and programs, such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the No Child Left Behind Act, the Workforce Investment Act, early childhood, higher education and education appropriations bill. The council offers a variety of publications, including newsletters, books, reports and other online resources. Its office is located in Washington, D.C.
