When brothers Ryan and Alan Pope graduated from the University of Georgia, they decided they liked Athens too much to leave. With the help of three family friends, they bought into the Sweet Peppers Deli franchise and became the corporation's 19th store and the very first in Georgia. The business opened in September 2010 in downtown Athens, not far from the UGA campus. 

The stuffed-purple-hat-donning orange-tight-wearing goofy thing dancing out front goes by the name of Petey the Pepper. He came with the franchise. The owners, though, came up with the idea of delivering their food on a bright yellow moped. "A very ugly yellow moped," they stress. They have been known to take the ugly yellow moped for a spin through downtown to bring even more attention to their deli in case folks cruising down West Broad miss Petey the badly dancing Pepper.  

Sweet Peppers serves up a variety of sandwiches, paninis, salads and desserts. Among the more unusual offerings are the Muffaletta, ham and salami and olive salad sandwich concoction, and the spicy shrimp, which is spicy shrimp stuffed into a giant baked potato. Along with the extensive menu, Sweet Peppers Deli also has free Wi-Fi.
