Berry's Produce is a little fruit and vegetable stand aside the on/off ramps of I285, in the parking lot of a gas station on a very busy section of Glenwood Avenue yet it is easily overlooked. Few of his customers are those stopping from the Interstate to get gas. Those folks might wonder over to him for a handful of Cajun boiled peanuts occasionally but for the most part his customers are locals and regulars. Ralph Berry has been in this same spot since 1996. Friends stop by as often just to sit and chat as they do to pick up a bunch of collard greens or some yams. Mr. Berry is here seven days a week unless he is not. Fish might be biting or a football game calling. The stand is officially in operation from April through December but then again a summertime trip up North is not unusual. The laid back nature of Mr. Berry does not extend to the choosing of his produce. Those he picks over carefully, dealing only with local farmers he knows personally. Mr. Berry also has a reputation for making a mean fried turkey and come Thanksgiving, his orders number several dozen so call early.
