To say Cafe 160 is an unassuming eatery would be an understatement. The restaurant does no advertising, is not at all visible from the very busy intersection of Clairemont and Commerce in downtown and limits its service to breakfast and lunch. Yet Cafe 160 does a brisk business thanks to its location on the ground floor of the back of the Fidelity Bank building. The Cafe's owner, Marienne Payne, chose this location solely for the captured audience of office workers above and around her. But in the years since opening, Ms. Payne has come to see her customers as part of a large extended family. She recognizes 90% of patrons on any given day as repeat customers and estimates she is on a first name basis with three-quarters of them. The Cafe serves lawyers and executives in a no-frills atmosphere with a small neighborhood feel. The food is simple and solid American fare - soups, sandwiches, salads, scrambled eggs and bacon breakfasts. Customers can use the self-serve area to load up on fountain soda, iced tea, coffee or cocoa. Bottled drinks are available from a small cooler and a case across from the cash register holds a variety of candies and chips. The large muffins and cookies above the salad display are made off-site but are fresh. The outdoor eating area has 4 wooden tables under large blue umbrellas and overlooks the employee parking lot and a row of brightly colored plants.
