There is a breezy slice of the Jamaican islands on a busy downtown Decatur street. Reggae beats spill out of Debbie's Cafe and can be heard from the four bamboo umbrella covered tables lining the sidewalk just beyond the front door. Four more tables ring the neat but small inside space. Debbie's head cook proclaims this is the best place in town to get authentic Jamaican food. There are the fat Jamaican beef patties warming on an aluminum platter just behind the cash register. There are the island popular D & G Jamaican sodas in flavors such as cola champagne, cream and pineapple. And the jerk chicken is a tried and true Jamaican favorite. But Debbie's also serves some traditional Southern dishes such as oxtails, collard greens and fried tilapia. Whether ordering authentic Jamaican food or some down home Southern treats don't forget to ask for a taste of sorrel. This signature Jamaican refreshment is made by boiling the sorrel fruit with ginger and sugar then chilling and serving alone or over ice. Students at nearby colleges receive discounts on Mondays and Wednesdays. Employees of the local courthouse receive their discounts on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
