In Carlinville, folks still talk about the legend of Angus Bailey. As the story goes, Angus was a loner, without a friend, who rode into town on a cold and windy night back in 1893. All he had on his mind was a big, juicy steak and the best whiskey money could buy. He quietly walked into a saloon at this very location and sat down to enjoy his meal when a fight broke out. Unfortunately, he was the cause of that fight. Seems he had been wrongly accused of cattle rustling by Old Man Merriweather. Before he had a chance to defend himself, Angus was swinging from a rope right out on the north side of the square. As the snow fell, the stranger was buried in a shallow grave at the edge of town.
