Other Details:
Built in 1872, this River North building has a colorful history as a grocery store, restaurant and speakeasy. Antiques, priceless collectibles and pieces of Americana adorn the bar in a manner that delivers a classic, old-school Chicago feel. With an amazing draft beer selection and a menu has something for everyone, the Green Door Tavern has long been a Chicago favorite.Nearby workers stop in for lunch during the day, while at night, young professionals in their 20s and 30s, local regulars and some tourists stop in for a quiet drink and dinner, and of course a few celebrities regularly frequent the Green Door. With a rich Chicago history as an Italian restaurant and Speakeasy from the 1920's the Green Door has witnessed it all! The name "The Green Door" originated because, during prohibition, a green door on a restaurant indicated the presence of a speakeasy. Today, the original 137 year old green front door is still standing and the speakeasy is available for private parties. When entering the speakeasy, one immediately senses the presence of the numerous unsavory characters that frequented the Green door in the distant past (and some in the not-so-distant past).
