The city of Gary, Ind. s Department of Health and Human Services provides a wide range of services and programs designed to promote healthy living through prevention, protection and intervention. The Gary Department of Health and Human Services Healthy People 2010 Action Plan has become the prevention agenda for the nation, building on a framework of initiatives that grew out of an alliance of 350 national membership organizations and 300 state health, mental health, substance abuse and environmental agencies. Thus, a powerful consortium was formed, developing what has become a road map for the community and others to improve the health of all residents by eliminating disparities.
