The Co-operative Central Reserve Fund and Share Insurance Fund were established in the early 1930s 1932 in response to the Great Depression. The Co-operative Central Reserve Fund acts as a “parent bank” – a centralized reserve and organizational nerve center – to its member banks. The purpose of the Share Insurance Fund (established two years later by the same member banks) is insuring deposits not otherwise covered by the FDIC.
