The Black Dog Tavern opened its doors in 1971 after Captain Robert Douglas endeavored to find a cure for the fact that the Vineyard did not have a year-round restaurant. The community pitched in to help him get it going, and the Tavern currently continues the year-round tradition, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner nearly every day of the year. Breakfast is comprised of huge portions, with pancakes and eggs as favorites that can be ordered through lunch in the off-season. The restaurant buys its fish and produce locally as often as possible and can adapt many recipes for vegetarian or gluten-free patrons with adequate notice. Other popular items are the BBQ ribs, salmon/crab cake sandwiches and the chowder.

Now that the town has passed new liquor laws, Black Dog also has beer and wine to offer, so customers can sit by the wood stove overlooking the harbor. The tavern also caters both on-site and off-site events and hosts many private parties. The wait can sometimes be up to two hours long in the summer, so calling ahead for reservations is suggested. Seeped with nautical history decorating the interior, the Black Dog Tavern is as New England as they come.
