Host of the notorious Whiz Bowl Championship cheesesteak-eating competion, South Street Steaks is considered by Washingtonian Magazine as one of the Best Dirt Cheap Eats.  But, for all who are not familiar with authentic South Street Philly cuisine, a few words of warning from the shop:

"All cheesesteaks/chicken cheesesteaks come with fried onions unless you tell us otherwise.  Sandwiches come with ca hoice of American cheese, Provolone cheese or  Cheez Whiz (hence the name, Whiz Bowl). Sorry, no mayonnaise. The term 'hoagie' refers to a cold sub, so don't ask for a cheesesteak haogie."
