Vermont, a northern New England state, is beloved for its fall colors, quaint inns and charming villages. One of the least populated states in the union, its capital is Montpelier (population less than 8,000). Fewer than 50,000 inhabit Burlington, Vermont’s largest city.

Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum in Stowe displays some 7,750 ski-related archives and artifacts, not counting the many items that come in pairs. A special section is dedicated to the 10th Mountain Division, a group of local mountain soldiers who served in WWII.

The state is the nation’s leading producer of maple syrup, but foodies will find many other local delights to interest them.

Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory in Waterbury, birthplace of flavor favorites such as “Cherry Garcia,” “Chunky Monkey,” “Phish Food,” and “Everything but the...,” is a must see. Factory tours include a visit to the sample room for a taste of the latest flavors, followed by a stop in the gift shop and Scoop Shop.

Lake Champlain Chocolates in Burlington offers three locations in town. Take advantage of weekday factory tours, where visitors can sample the goods and witness the creation of chocolate in a multitude of forms, all kosher and free of preservatives.

Shelburne Farms is a 1,400-acre working model farm and nonprofit educational center on Lake Champlain. Founded in 1886, it boasts 400 acres of green-certified woodlands and seven acres of organic vegetable gardens.

Families will enjoy picking apples at Adam's Apple Orchard and Farm in Williston. Cold Hollow Cider Mill, open year round, offers cider, cider donuts and other apple-related specialties.
