Hartland's rich history, scenic landscape and cooperative tradition intersect at one of the community's signature landmarks — Waldenwoods Resort & Conference Center. Located on the eastern shore of the 140-acre, spring-fed Lake Walden in the midst of 400 acres of woods, wetlands and meadows, Waldenwoods offers a variety of services from weddings and conferences to camping, fishing, golf and membership resort facilities.
The retreat was started by industrialist and Hartland philanthropist J. Robert Crouse who began construction in 1924 on land owned by his family since 1844. Designed to help encourage cooperation among business leaders, it attracted the likes of inventor Thomas A. Edison and auto giant Henry Ford. Still family owned and operated, Crouse's philosophy of cooperation and "family association for whole-hearted service" continues to this day. About 1,100 members belong to the resort, which offers 320 camp sites, 10 cottages and membership to the Resorts of Distinction network that provides free camping at affiliated sites across the country. Banquet facilities — highlighted by the 10,000-square-foot Cromaine Lodge — play host to holiday, family, business and community events.
