San Francisco's Golden Gate Park is an outdoor oasis in a bustling city, drawing tourists and locals alike. That could be because it's much more than a typical park. The park's 1,017 acres feature lakes, picturesque gardens, walking trails and museums.

How to get to Golden Gate Park
Golden Gate Park is accessible by car, public transportation and bike. Street parking is available on streets adjacent to and throughout the park, although these streets can get crowded on the weekends. The city's MUNI bus has stops throughout the park, as does a free shuttle service.

Best and worst time to go to Golden Gate Park
Spring is best for flower lovers, specifically May for the Rose Garden and June for the Dahlia Garden. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends. Visitors in November and December may experience rain, though the park is often greener in these months.

Admission to Golden Gate Park
Park grounds are free to visit. However, museums in the park such as the 1 and the 1 do charge a fee, which can range from $10-35.

Must see/do at Golden Gate Park
Visitors seeking to wander in the outdoors should visit the 1, which is thoughtfully planned and features a five-story pagoda, multiple koi ponds, bamboo and cherry trees. Those looking for indoor activities can spend hours exploring the California Academy of Sciences, with its aquarium, four-story rainforest and earthquake simulator.

Other places to visit near Golden Gate Park
Two of San Francisco's big attractions, the 1 and 1, aren't far from the park. Visitors who haven't had their fill of the outdoors should head to 1, which has views of both.

Insider tip for visitors to Golden Gate Park
One of the best views in the city is free. While the de Young Museum charges for access to the museum, no ticket is needed for the Hamon Observation Tower, with its 360-degree view of San Francisco.
