To speak of the tradition of Tenampa is to remember one of Mexico's most memorable traditions. The origins of the name "Tenampa" come from the Aztecs who spoke a language called Náhuatl. It belongs to a large group of Indian languages which also include the languages spoken by the Comanche, Pima, Shoshone and other tribes of western North America. The significance of the word Tenampa is "In the murals" or a place of murals." El Tenampa was originally founded by Juan Hernandez, from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, then in 1952 he and his wife moved to Mexico City. From then on El Tenampa was famous for having the most popular Mariachi bands play and become "murals" on the walls of the restaurant. The first mariachi to play in Mexico City's famous "Plaza Garibaldi" was also the first Mariachi who played at El Tenampa. El Tenampa continues to have murals on its walls of Mexico's fine music history from 1925 to the present.
