Howe Caverns is a premier natural attraction, a living, limestone cave, carved by an underground river over the course of 6 million years, located 156-feet below the earth's surface. An Schoharie County, N.Y. farmer discovered the caverns more than 160 years ago. Formed in 1927, Howe Caverns incorporated, a public company owned by shareholders, opened the caverns to the public on Memorial Day weekend of 1929. Howe Caverns remains one of the most popular attractions and vacation destinations in New York State, attracting more than 200,000 visitors annually. Disney s Family Fun readers voted the caverns as one of the Top 5 Northeast family attractions. Located across from the Visitor Center on the Howe Caverns Estate, the Howe Caverns Motel is owned and operated by the corporation. The motel overlooks the beautiful mountains and peaceful valleys of what is known as Leather stocking Country. The Howe Caverns Restaurant is open to the general public in season and available for banquets, parties, reunions, receptions, student groups and tour groups.
