After purchasing their dream house — an 1860 Mattituck farmhouse surrounded by 38 acres of dormant farmland — in 1996, Charles and Barbara Smithen decided to follow another dream of becoming vintners by planting some of those acres with chardonnay grapes and launching Sherwood House Vineyards.
Today, Sherwood House Wine can be found at two locations: a quaint outdoor tasting facility on 2600 Oregon Road in Mattituck and a recently-opened elaborated tasting house on 1291 Main Road in Jamesport. Though Sherwood House Chardonnay is still a popular varietal, sales of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and the sparkling blanc de blanc are "neck and neck" with the vineyard's orignal wine, according to Ms. Smithen.
