Murals on 54, Manhattan's newest historic restaurant, is Warwick New York Hotel's refurbished dining room. It not only features a modern approach to Mediterranean cuisine but also Dean Cornwell's original historic murals, which have been completely restored. The dining room's fresh design accentuates the historic murals painted by Dean Cornwell, known as the 'Dean of American Illustrators'. In 1937, William Randolph Hearst commissioned Cornwell to paint murals for The Raleigh Room, the restaurant inside his Warwick New York hotel. Cornwell completed painting the murals in 1938, which depict Sir Walter Raleigh receiving his charter from Queen Elizabeth I in 1584 and Raleigh landing at Roanoke Island.A barter agreement between Cornwell and Hearst was arranged for the painting of the murals. Shortly after, a dispute arose regarding compensation. Seeking revenge, Cornwell painted certain images on the murals, which were considered obscene at the time. The large mural on the left side of the restaurant was covered for more than 40 years, due to the controversy. It included a man urinating on the Queen and another man urinating on Sir Walter Raleigh. The mural on the far wall pictured an Indian with bare buttocks. The dispute was eventually settled and Cornwell painted out one of the obscenities; however, the others remained.Upon visiting The Raleigh Room, one journalist described it as 'one of the most colorful spots in the city with its distinctive decorations and informal atmosphere. The room's murals by Dean Cornwell incorporate the shields and names of many prominent people'. These murals, now completely restored, have received so much attention, in fact, that The Museum of Modern Art approached the hotel about purchasing them for $100,000 several years ago, but the hotel owner declined their offer.
