This landmark 1902 railroad car has held down a spot on Northport's Main Street since 1927, when it was delivered and put into its current position.
Tim Hess took over the diner in 1994 when his father, Otto, retired after running it for 27 years. It's got a loyal following, and the family recently added the Ship To Shore bait-and-tackle shop out back off the patio. The shop also carries Woolrich and Columbia clothing.
The restaurant features appropriately named "dining car" breakfast specials and breakfast is served all day. There's a Belgian house waffle, French toast, pancakes and a kids corner that includes a dish called Humpty Dumpty, or an egg with potato and toast.
The lunch menu has grilled Reubens, Monte Cristos, club sandwiches, hot open sandwiches and fish and chips, as well as burgers, salads and a homemade quiche of the day.
Beer and wine are available. Reservations are not accepted. There are 10 tables plus counter seats inside, but the seasonal patio expands seating by another 16 tables.
