Other Details:
In the summer of 1968, The McCormick family moved to Drexel Hill from the Kingsessing section of Philadelphia. In those days, corner stores and deli’s filled the shopping needs of one car families. Neighborhoods were defined by their parishes and their deli’s. Kelly’s Deli was a St. Dorothy institution. St. Andrew’s had Paul’s Deli on the State Road side; the hugely popular Murphy’s’ Deli on Garrett Road and the Drexel House which they shared with St. Charles which also had the Open Pantry. St. Bernadette’s had the Crackerbarrel with its most popular polyester green Crackerbarrel Deli T’s and the State Food Market and butcher shop. Through the years, supermarkets and franchise food stores have hurt the deli business and only a few of these stores have survived. One that has survived is State Food which became Fred’s Deli shortly after the McCormick’s moved to Turner Avenue.
