Academy Sports traces its beginning to 1938 when the store opened as the Academy Tire Shop in San Antonio. After a few years, military surplus was added to the inventory. By the 1950 s, Academy added a store in Austin, Texas, and expanded the operation to four stores. Its expanded distribution center has more than 1 million square feet of processing and inventory space, and operates day and night to supply the store locations with merchandise.
