Long-time Stafford county residents, Cliff and Donna Carlton, recently moved to their new home in western Stafford county after living in North Stafford for almost 20 years. After recently becoming empty nester, Donna decided to fulfil her long time dream of opening a bed and breakfast. The second of the two guestrooms is the Chatham. The owner and builder William Fitzhugh entertained Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. During the Civil War, the Northern troops used Chatham, with its commanding view of Fredericksburg, as a strategic post. Later, Chatham was used as a war hospital with many signs of suffering that the soldiers endured still evident today. Chatham remained empty for 50 years until it was purchased and restored to her once grandeur.
