As part of the largest credit union in Washington, BECU in Bellevue is a member-owned and not-for-profit financial cooperative. Unlike banks, who operate independently, credit unions work together and allow members free access to more than 28,000 ATMs and branch locations nationwide. Bank customers must either use their own bank branches and ATMs or pay a surcharge. Because of BECU's not-for-profit status, it is able to focus on customers, not making a profit.
