Ken & Kim Grassi began their own business in Tacoma in the manner of a continuing family tradition. Ken's family had owned a grocery store at S. 17th & Cushman for many years. At that time the Hilltop area was primarily an old Italian neighborhood. Kim's parents were involved in running a jewelry business in downtown Seattle. Ken's initial business venture started in 1976, with a small plant store in Fircrest. Within a few years this storefront had met with such success that it outgrew this location, and it was time for expansion. In 1979, Tacoma's landmark gift and full-service florist shop, Grassi's, opened on the corner of Center and Union. Grassi's at Center & Union is noted for their dramatic window displays, and dazzling flower artistry. These attractions draw people from throughout the Northwest to see the gorgeous gift and flower combinations. Also featured at this location is an extensive European-style Cut Flower Market, delcious, locally-made chocolates, and hundreds of expressive cards to choose from. Other specialties include one-of-a-kind silk and dried flower arrangements, beautiful and unique gift specialities, distinctive lamps and wall art, and gardening gifts.
