Since La Esperanza closed several years ago, there has been an absence of classic, sit-down Mexican restaurants in Davis. That changed in October: Tres Hermanas (named in Spanish for three sisters from Chihuahua, Mexico, who, along with their brother, own this restaurant) is an upscale, eclectically decorated restaurant offering authentic fare.

The three sisters, Sonia, Norma and Dora Saenz (brother Sergio manages Tres Hermanas), brought from Chihuahua unique recipes they learned in their mother's kitchen, which are expressed throughout the extensive Tres Hermanas menu. The carnitas, for example, are probably more memorable than any you'll taste in Davis. Cooked for four hours in lard, with orange juice, Coca-Cola and milk being added just when the fried pork starts getting tender, this dish is worth savoring.

There are striking art objects and murals on the walls commemorating such Mexican festivals as the Day Of The Dead. Seating is available outdoors beside a fountain with a view of Davis's antique Amtrak train depot beyond. On busy nights, seating at the bar by the front entrance is an option while waiting for a table. Happy hour runs from 3pm to 6pm daily.
