Debbi and Randy Fields opened the first Mrs. Fields Cookies in 1977, in Palo Alto, California. Debbi Fields has a book called One Smart Cookie. In it, she explains, "at last I understood that I had to do something that was mine.... I gave up, in that moment, the desire to succeed in other people's eyes and realized that first I had to succeed for myself." And that is exactly what she did. In fact, in her early years, she donated cookies to the Red Cross for blood donors and refused to sell cold cookies to her customers. She began with chocolate chip and now sells combinations ranging from pecan whites, milk chocolate and walnuts and semisweet chocolate with walnuts to semisweet chocolate with macadamia nuts and coconut with macadamia nuts. Mrs. Fields also bakes and sells brownies, pretzels and other baked goods.
